Krista Kilvert

Krista Kilvert is a conceptually-based, mixed media artist whose oeuvre spans more than three decades and reflects a cross-pollination of highly diverse materials and processes. Her body of glass work titled 'Here Today Gone Tomorrow’ includes delicately hand cast crystal pieces such as maple leaves, branches, canoes, shells and risers which intend to stimulate reflection and contemplation on nature, environmental impact and consequence. Kilvert’s glass projects are limited in production and availability.

Kilvert creates the original masters for her glass works and then engages specialists skilled in the technical production of pate de verre to produce crystal castings or kiln slumping of sheet glass. She also engages optical coating technicians that apply a reflective dichroic finish to select works such as the maples which is highly responsive to ambient light and coloration shifts.

Dichroic coatings involve the application of metallic vapours to the crystal when suspended in vacuum chambers under extreme heat and pressure. These coatings were developed by NASA for application on the astronaut’s shields to reflect the heat and light of the sun. They are now also commonly used in satellites and other industrial applications.

Kilvert has an undergraduate degree in the arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design, an MFA from CalArts in Valencia, California and has also attended the Pilchuck Glass School, Stanwood, Washington.

As a second generation immigrant to Canada, she lives and works on the unceded territory of the Stó:lō Coast Salish peoples of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia.
